A Vietnam travel eSIM roams onto Viettel Mobile, Vinaphone or MobiFone. Viettel has by far the deepest national footprint, including the northern mountains and the Mekong Delta.

ℹ Before you buy
Local Vietnamese SIM cards require passport registration: you must show your passport at an operator kiosk or shop, and the SIM is registered in your name. A roaming travel eSIM bought abroad does not require this, because it is not a Vietnamese subscription.

- When you land
- Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch off airplane mode after landing at Noi Bai (HAN), Tan Son Nhat (SGN) or Da Nang (DAD) — it should register on Viettel, Vinaphone or MobiFone within a couple of minutes. This matters most at Tan Son Nhat, where the arrivals hall is often heavily congested and being able to book a Grab immediately is the difference between leaving and waiting.
Common questions
- Does an eSIM work in Vietnam?
- Yes. The profile registers on Viettel Mobile, Vinaphone or MobiFone as a roaming guest, with no restriction on foreign travel eSIMs. The one hard requirement is a 4G-capable, eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked handset: Vietnam has switched off its 2G network, so older phones without 4G will not connect at all.
- Do I need a passport or ID registration for a Vietnamese eSIM?
- Not for a travel eSIM bought abroad. Local Vietnamese SIM cards do require passport registration at an operator kiosk or shop, and the SIM is issued in your name. A roaming eSIM is not a Vietnamese subscription, so none of that applies — you install it before you fly and nothing else is needed.
- Will it activate on arrival at Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat?
- It should register within a couple of minutes of leaving airplane mode, which is worth having at Tan Son Nhat in particular, where the arrivals hall gets very congested and a working Grab booking saves a long queue. Da Nang is quicker. Confirm Data Roaming is enabled on the eSIM line, not your home SIM.
