Japan

A Japan travel eSIM roams onto NTT Docomo or SoftBank, both of which cover the whole Tokaido corridor and every major sightseeing route. Install it at home over Wi-Fi, because Japanese airport Wi-Fi often needs an email confirmation you cannot receive offline.

When you land
Install and scan the QR code at home on your own Wi-Fi, before you board — Japanese airport Wi-Fi frequently needs an email confirmation you cannot open without data. On landing, turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM, leave your home line's data OFF, and expect to register on Docomo or SoftBank within a minute or two of leaving airplane mode.

Common questions

Does an eSIM work in Japan?
Yes. Japan has no restriction on foreign travel eSIMs, and the profile registers on NTT Docomo or SoftBank as a roaming guest. Your handset must be eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked — check this before you fly, because an unlock request can take a carrier a day or more to process.
Do I need to register my passport or ID for a Japanese eSIM?
Not for a travel eSIM bought outside Japan. The identity-verification rule that took effect in April 2026 applies to data SIMs and eSIMs issued by Japanese providers and online MVNOs. A roaming profile you activated at home is not covered by it.
Will it activate on arrival at Narita, Haneda or Kansai?
It should connect within a couple of minutes of landing, once you take the phone out of airplane mode. Install the profile before boarding, though. Airport Wi-Fi at all three often requires an email confirmation link, which you cannot open without data — a genuinely circular problem.
