Turkey — Read the full guide
A Turkey travel eSIM roams onto Turkcell or Vodafone TR on solid 4G; 5G is still limited, so plan around LTE. Install the profile before you fly: Turkey's regulator has blocked many eSIM providers' sites and apps, so buying or topping up from inside the country can simply fail. Unlimited plans also throttle after a daily full-speed allowance.
Before you buy
Turkey's telecoms regulator, the BTK, blocked the websites and apps of more than 50 eSIM providers in decisions dated 10 July 2025, 17 July 2025 and 15 September 2025. An eSIM installed BEFORE arrival keeps working normally, but buying a new eSIM, installing a fresh profile, or topping up from inside Turkey can fail, because those steps need to reach the provider's site.
Turkey requires IMEI registration for a foreign handset used with a Turkish SIM beyond 120 days, after which the device is blocked on Turkish networks. This applies to local Turkish SIM cards; a roaming travel eSIM is not affected within a normal tourist stay.
Turkcell has the broadest national footprint, and in a country this large that is the deciding factor. It holds up along the Anatolian highways, across the Central Anatolian plateau and in the smaller towns of the east, where the alternatives thin out. Vodafone TR is competitive in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and the big coastal resorts, and can feel quicker in dense city cells. If your profile allows manual network selection, Turkcell is the sensible fallback the moment you leave a city's orbit, and it is worth setting before a long drive rather than after the signal has already gone.
Coverage tracks where people live, which shapes a Turkish itinerary in specific ways. The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are well served through the resort belt from Bodrum to Alanya, but a Blue Cruise gulet that anchors in a quiet bay may sit outside usable coverage for hours at a time. Cappadocia's towns are fine; its valleys, and the balloon flights above them, are not consistently so. Long intercity buses across the Anatolian interior will drop and reacquire signal repeatedly. Download offline maps and your tickets before any of these legs, and treat connectivity between towns as a bonus.
The blocking decisions are the single most practical thing to understand about buying an eSIM for Turkey. The regulator, BTK, ordered access blocked to the websites and apps of more than fifty eSIM providers in 2025. Using an eSIM is not illegal, and a profile already installed on your phone keeps working normally on the local networks. What breaks is anything that must reach the provider afterwards: a first purchase, installing a fresh profile, or adding data mid-trip. So buy before you fly, install and test the profile at home until it shows the carrier name, keep the provider's app installed, and size the plan generously up front.
Practically, plan on capable 4G everywhere that matters and treat any 5G you find as a bonus rather than the baseline. Google Maps is reliable, but downloading the Istanbul, Cappadocia and coastal regions offline saves a lot of grief. BiTaksi and Uber both work in Istanbul, and both need live data at the exact moment you are standing on a curb, which is the worst moment to discover an empty plan. Museum Pass and ticketing apps, plus live translation for menus and signage, are steady background consumers. Arriving at Istanbul Airport (IST), Sabiha Gökçen or Antalya, your profile should register within a couple of minutes.

When you land
Install the eSIM and scan the QR code at home, on your own Wi-Fi, before you fly — in Turkey this is not general good advice but the whole point, because the regulator's blocking can stop you buying or installing a profile once you are in the country. On landing at Istanbul Airport, Sabiha Gökçen or Antalya, switch off airplane mode, set the eSIM as your mobile data line, and make sure Data Roaming is ON for that line; expect to register on Turkcell or Vodafone TR within a couple of minutes.

Common questions
- Are eSIMs banned in Turkey?
- No, using one is not banned. In 2025 the regulator BTK blocked the websites and apps of more than fifty eSIM providers, which is a different thing. A profile installed before you arrive works normally on Turkish networks. Buying a new eSIM or topping up from inside Turkey is what may fail.
- Do I have to register my IMEI or pay a device fee?
- Not for a roaming travel eSIM on a normal tourist trip. Turkey's IMEI rule applies to a foreign handset used with a Turkish local SIM beyond 120 days, after which the device is blocked on Turkish networks. Because your eSIM roams rather than using a local subscription, that clock does not apply to you.
- How much data do I need for ten days in Turkey?
- Maps, messaging, taxi apps, browsing and translation come to roughly 400 to 600 MB a day, so 5 to 10 GB covers ten days for most travellers. Because topping up locally may not work, round up rather than down. Hotel Wi-Fi is widespread and good for large downloads and photo backups.
- Can I use the personal hotspot?
- On most Turkey plans yes, and tethering draws from the same allowance. On unlimited plans the hotspot shares the daily full-speed allowance too, so a laptop can exhaust it quickly and leave everything at reduced speed until the next day. Remember that you may not be able to buy more data locally.
- Will it activate on arrival at Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen?
- It should register within a couple of minutes of leaving airplane mode, usually before you reach passport control. If nothing appears, toggle airplane mode once, confirm Data Roaming is on for the eSIM line, and check that the eSIM is your selected mobile data line rather than your home SIM.
- eSIM or a local Turkish SIM?
- For a tourist trip the eSIM is far simpler, and it sidesteps both the shop visit and the IMEI clock. A local Turkish SIM makes sense mainly for long stays where a Turkish number matters, but then the 120-day IMEI registration rule becomes your problem rather than a footnote.
- Does it include a Turkish phone number?
- No. These profiles are data-only, so there is no number for calls or SMS, and verification codes from your bank or from Turkish services will not arrive on this line. Keep your home SIM active for those, and use WhatsApp, which is what most people in Turkey use anyway, for calls.
